My Grandfather winning the DSM

My Grandfather William Lucas was born in Hull on 9th June 1878. He was a trawler fisherman like his father before him. Like many trawlermen he became a "Minesweeper" during WW1. In 1917 he was awarded the DSM. I don't know the exact details why he was given this medal but my aunt told me it was for saving two nurses. Round the outside of the medal it reads S.A, 1423 William Lucas 2nd HD.R.N.R. "Diamond11" Minesweeping 1917. In 1940 he moved to Middlesex to work in a munitions factory. He died 24th September 1949.
