'Oss Wash' 'Dead Bod'

Village, town or city, we all have those special sentimental memories of our past and for generations of Hull folk, the old 'Oss (horse) Wash' was one of many such places around our great city. Oss Wash was a small landing area used by lighters unloading fruit and vegetables, pilot vessels, small craft launching and, of course, for washing 'osses'; dray, cart, race or pony - horses of every kind would find themselves taking a dip in the Humber while dozens of children tried begging a ride from their owners.

The Dead Bod (bird) is simply a piece of riverside graffiti which adorned a shed on a quay on the Humber. Dead Bod was so visible from the river that it became a navigation mark for passing mariners.

Dead Bod first appeared when the skipper of a small vessel moored by the shed kicked a live bod into the 'watter' thinking in was a dead 'un. A tin of paint and a few beers later and 'Dead Bod' appeared on the shed to show him the difference!
